Parent Helps from the 5/10 Sermon on Honoring Women of Faith

Parents, we want to give you some guidance when talking through the sermon from this Sunday with your kids. Maybe you can do a recap tonight during your family worship time or during dinner.

Be sure to check out the kids lesson for this Sunday @ goredemptionkids.com. Here are some discussion starter questions to connect what they are learning with the sermon:

  • Preschool
    • What was your favorite part of worship today? (Did you sing and love the songs? Did you have fun seeing Pastor Ed? Was it nice to spend time with Mommy and Daddy?)
    • Ask the kids if they remember who the 4 women were that Pastor Ed mentioned. (Deborah, Hannah, Ruth, The Widow.)
    • You can also mention that today’s children’s lesson has a mother and woman of faith in it too. It was Moses’ mother.
    • Optional. You may want to use one of these stories each day this week to do a family devotional time. Spend time reviewing each of the 4 stories in an overview with your kids. (If you need to read the stories before you summarize them, here are where they can be found: Deborah-Judges 4-5, Hannah – 1 Samual 1, Ruth – Entire book of Ruth, The Widow – 2 Kings 4, and Moses – Exodus 2)
    • All of these women had something in common. Do you know what it was? (Wait for answers. See next point for more details.)
    • Each women had a problem but their faith in God allowed them to walk through it.
    • What do you think faith means? (Faith – trusting, believing God will do what He tells you He will. Use a personal example of how your child displays faith in you or talk about a chair. We have faith in a chair because we believe it will hold us when we sit down. We trust the chair will do what it promised to do. This is the same with God. Our faith is trusting that He will care for us because He said He will.)
    • Have you got a problem?
    • How do you think God can help you with your problem? (Remind them that they can have faith or trust that God will help them through the problem.)
    • Be sure to check out today’s children’s lesson @redemptionkids for more discussion questions and information on teaching your child(ren).
  • Elementary
    • What was your favorite part of worship today?
    • Ask if they remember who the 4 women were that Pastor Ed mentioned and if they can tell you anything about each women’s story. (Deborah, Hannah, Ruth, The Widow.)
    • Who is the woman of faith in today’s children’s lesson? (Moses’ Mom.)
    • Consider asking the kids if these stories are found in the Old Testament or New Testament. Reflect that each story is in the Old Testament so it is before the time when Jesus was born and died. Remind them that today’s children’s lesson about Moses is also found in the Old Testament. Consider finding each story in a Bible. (See next bullet point for locations.)
    • Spend time reviewing each of the 4 stories in an overview with your kids. Also, consider reviewing the story of Moses’ birth as we are learning about Moses being born and how his mother had to protect him in our children’s lesson today. You may want to use one of these stories each day this week to do a family devotional time. (If you need to read the stories before you summarize them, here are where they can be found: Deborah-Judges 4-5, Hannah – 1 Samual 1, Ruth – Entire book of Ruth, The Widow – 2 Kings 4, anf Moses Birth – Exodus 2).

    • What problem did Moses’ Mom have? (Like the women Pastor Ed talked about, Moses’ mom had a problem. She lived in Egypt and Pharaoh had ordered for all the baby boys of the Israelites to be killed. Moses’ mom was an Israelite and so as her baby boy Moses was supposed to be killed by Pharaoh.)
    • How do you think Moses’ Mom showed that she had faith in God? (She trusted that God would protect her baby and was willing give Moses up so God could protect him.)
    • Have you got a problem?
    • How do you think God can help you with your problem? (Remind them that they can have faith or trust that God will help them through the problem.)

We hope this helps you talk with your kids about worship. We also want to point you to our children’s ministry weekly lessons which are only available on the blog. Remember the Bible is one big story and it is important for us to learn that whole story!
