Parent Helps from the 5/3 Sermon on Romans 8:1-11

Parents, we want to give you some guidance when talking through the sermon from this Sunday with your kids. Maybe you can do a recap tonight during your family worship time or during dinner.

Be sure to check out the kids lesson for this Sunday @ goredemptionkids.com. Here are some discussion starter questions to connect what they are learning with the sermon:

  • Preschool
    • What was your favorite part of worship today? (Did you sing and love the songs? Did you have fun seeing Pastor Ed? Was it nice to spend time with Mommy and Daddy?)
    • Can you tell me about a time you did something wrong or sinned? (made a choice that was not pleasing to God)? How did it make you feel? (hopefully they will say bad and you can use that to explain they felt guilty over their choice.)
    • Pastor Ed talked about a BIG word! The word condemnation. Let’s talk about what it means. (Explain that condemnation comes after we sin. Remember sin is when we have an icky heart and we don’t honor and glorify God with our words and actions because our heart is icky. After we sin (make a choice that is not pleasing to God) we feel condemnation or guilt over our sins. Condemnation is a big word for feeling guilty for our wrong choices. We are condemned or guilty of wrong doing which keeps us from having a friendship with God.)
    • Did you know that it is important that we feel guilty sometimes? Feeling guilty means we know we have done something wrong and it helps us know that we need to make a change.
    • Tell them that when they ask Jesus into their heart they have a friend that comes into their heart to help them fight against sin (an icky heart) and make a change. We call Him the Holy Spirit. Say, we will be learning more about the Holy Spirit next week.

    • What is an example of a time you felt guilty and it made you change the next time you were faced with that same choice?
    • Tell them that when they ask Jesus into their heart they have a friend that comes into their heart to help them fight against sin and make a change. We call Him the Holy Spirit.
    • Have you ever heard of the Holy Spirit? What do you know about Him? (E.g. He guides us. He lives in our heart when we become a Christian. He helps us understand and grow in what we know about God. He helps us think about things in the right way. He is the power inside of us (as believers). He also helps us bear fruit; show love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22) to others. )
    • Say, we will be learning more about the Holy Spirit next week so watch for what we can learn about Him.

We hope this helps you talk with your kids about worship. We also want to point you to our children’s ministry weekly lessons which are only available on the blog. Remember the Bible is one big story and it is important for us to learn that whole story!
