Parent Helps from the 4/26 Sermon on Romans 7

Parents, we want to give you some guidance when talking through the sermon from this Sunday with your kids. Maybe you can do a recap tonight during your family worship time or during dinner.

Be sure to check out the kids lesson for this Sunday. Here are some discussion starter questions to connect what they are learning with the sermon:

  • Preschool
    • Pastor Ed talked about battles today. Do you know what a battle is? (When something isn’t right and there is a fighting to prevent more bad things from happening.)
    • Pastor Ed told us about a battle we cannot win and a battle we will definitely win (or we cannot lose).
    • The battle we can’t win is that we have sin and we can’t just do good things to get rid of our sin on our own. Do you remember what we said sin was a few weeks ago? (Sin is when we have an icky heart. We don’t honor and glorify God with our words and actions because our heart is icky.)
    • There is a second battle. We can’t lose that battle because Jesus has already won it for us. What did Jesus save us from? (Our sins.)
    • Jesus was the only person that could save us.
    • Look at today’s kids Bible story about Joseph and see if you can find ways that God took care of him. (e.g. God put him in a safe place, even if it was a jail. God explained the dream to Joseph so he could explain the dream to Pharaoh. God gave Joseph favor with the Pharaoh.)
    • How does God take care of you?
  • Elementary
    • In this weeks sermon Pastor Ed talked about The Struggle. In the struggle he mentioned 2 battles. Do you know what a battle is? (When something isn’t right and there is a fighting to prevent more bad things from happening.)
    • What were the 2 battles Pastor mentioned? (The battle we cannot win and the battle we cannot lose.)
    • The battle we cannot win is that we have sin and we can’t just do good things (or just obey a list of rules, the law) to get rid of our sin on our own. Do you remember what we said sin was a few weeks ago? (Sin is when we have an icky heart. We don’t honor and glorify God with our words and actions because our heart is icky.)
    • There is a second battle. The battle we cannot lose. We cannot lose because Jesus has already won it for us. Jesus won the battle against our sin for us. Do you know how He won this battle? (He lived a perfect, sinless life and died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins so we could have a relationship with God again.)
    • Joseph seemed to be in a battle he could not win when he was sold into slavery. Do you remember who sold him into slavery? (His brothers.)
    • In today’s story kids Bible lesson can you think of another battle Joseph was in where God had to protect him against someone? (Potiphar’s wife.) Did God protect Him even in this battle? (Yes, even though he was thrown in jail God had a plan and that was part of the plan.)
    • God is with us and he fights the battle for us because He is in control. We know God rescued Joseph even in this story.
    • Look at the story of Joseph and see if you can find ways that God took care of him. (e.g. God put him in a safe place, even if it was a jail. God explained the dream to Joseph so he could explain the dream to Pharaoh. God gave Joseph favor with the Pharaoh.)
    • Name some ways that God is taking care of you right now.

We hope this helps you talk with your kids about worship and tie the information in with our weekly lessons which are only available on the blog. Remember the Bible is one big story and it is important for us to learn that whole story!
